What is the Master Cutler’s Challenge?

The challenge is an entrepreneurial challenge – meaning that the Master asks for businesses and schools to raise money for the chosen charity by being creative, to set a target and take part in events and activities

Who is the Master Cutler?

The Master Cutler is the Head of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. Their role is to promote Sheffield to the rest of the world as a leading manufacturer in industry.

This year the Master is Phil Rodrigo – the Vice President of Outokumpu – a global steel manufacturer.

How can schools take part?

Schools can decide to take part in the Master Cutler’s Challenge as part of the BIG Community Challenge.

You will receive a fundraising pack and some ideas to inspire you.

If you decide to take part, any money you raise will go directly towards creating two new garden spaces at the Northern General Hospital for people with dementia.

One garden will be a calming space to help patients relax and enjoy the calm outdoors. The second garden will be an activity garden to stimulate patients. Both gardens will be connected by a reminiscence corridor providing stimulation and conversation.

Would you like to raise money to help build these beautiful garden spaces?

Sign up to the MCC today and we will send you a fundraising pack full of activities and ideas for you and your school.  We will also send you some Forget-me-not seeds to start off your own garden.

At the end of the challenge, we will invite all schools to a special celebration and awards  event in the Cutler’s Hall to meet the Master and Mistress Cutler where you will be presented with certificates and awards.

What is dementia?

  • Dementia is an illness that affects how the brain works
  • Dementia can affect a person’s personality and habits
  • Dementia is an illness that gets worse over time.
  • There currently is no cure for dementia.
  • You can still connect and show your love to people with dementia

Do you know anyone that has been diagnosed with dementia?

A person with dementia can start to behave differently, here are some examples:

  • They may feel scared or angry about how the disease is affecting them
  • Their memory can be affected – they may not be able to remember names, words or events
  • They may start to feel sad and lonely and not seem like the happy person you once knew
  • Their physical health might be affected – they might be slower, less enthusiastic about moving around or going places
  • They might forget things that you think they should know, for example – what day, month or year it is
  • They may not recognise familiar faces or places
  • They may feel a loss of control and become angry because they don’t recognise where they are or who they are with
  • They might not feel understood or listened to
